View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Morehead Mountain Lookout stood inside the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, in Valley County, Idaho.1,2 The first cabin was built in 1933, and lightning destroyed it that same year.1,2,3 A ground-mounted L-4 cab replaced it in 1934.2,1

The sources we read do not name anyone who staffed the lookout. Idaho Fire Lookouts says it has not yet documented who staffed this lookout.3

The South Idaho chapter of the Forest Fire Lookout Association reported stabilization work on Morehead in its 2014 annual report.4 The Treasure Valley Back Country Horsemen and the Salmon-Challis National Forest did the work, and the Southwest Idaho RAC and the Idaho Heritage Trust helped fund it.4 The Register and Idaho Fire Lookouts both date a refurbishment by a Treasure Valley Back Country Horsemen crew to 2015.1,3 The 2014 report describes stabilization work, and the sources do not show whether that and the 2015 refurbishment are the same job.4

The Register reports the Boundary Fire as having destroyed the lookout on September 9, 2021.1 Idaho Fire Lookouts gives the same date and says the lookout burned.3 Firelookout.com dates the loss of the cab to a 2021 forest fire.2

The Register listed the lookout on October 2, 2020, as US 1450, ID 143.1 The Former Fire Lookout Sites Register listed the site on May 22, 2022, as US 2080, ID 31.5

None of the sources we read describes what, if anything, is still standing at the site, so this story does not describe any footings or view. Idaho Fire Lookouts lists the site as a hike-in lookout that burned.3 Firelookout.com places it 16 miles southeast of Warm Lake.2 We found no current access rules for the site in the sources.
