View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Mount George is in Idaho County, Idaho, at 7,747 feet, about 16 miles north-northeast of Magruder R.S.1

The first lookout was a crow's nest, which Forest Lookouts dates to about 1924, citing Kresek.1,2 A July 1932 newspaper item, quoted by Forest Lookouts, shows a lookout on the mountain reporting snow.2 In 1941 a ten-foot L-4 cab tower went up on the site.1,3,2 Fire Lookout and Idaho Fire Lookouts describe it as a pole tower, while Forest Lookouts calls it a timber tower.1,3,2

Fire Lookout and Forest Lookouts place the mountain in the Bitterroot National Forest. Idaho Fire Lookouts names the Nez Perce National Forest instead.1,3,2

Fire Lookout and Idaho Fire Lookouts list lookout staff from 1952 to 1961: Donald Woods, William Moen for part of a season, Dick Montag, Dave Warris, Lee Anderson and Tony Rasmussen.1,3 A 1962 newspaper item, quoted by Forest Lookouts, places Rasmussen on the mountain in 1961.2

The lookout was lost in 1969. Fire Lookout and Idaho Fire Lookouts say it burned down.1,3 Forest Lookouts says the Forest Service removed the lookout by burning that year, so the sources differ on how it ended.2

None of the sources we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today.1,3,2 Idaho Fire Lookouts lists the site as a hike-in.3
