View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.7 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Mount Harrington is in the Bitterroot National Forest, and the Idaho Fire Lookouts site gives the summit an elevation of 8,186 feet.1 The first lookout went up around 1930: a 60-foot pole tower with a 7-by-7-foot cab.2,1,3 The sites date that first tower to 1930, or to around that year.2,1,3 By 1940 the summit tower stood 40 feet tall and carried an L-4 cab.2,1,3

A National Register study of the region's fire lookouts says the Salmon Mountain District once stationed men at Mount Harrington. Those men were told to serve as lookouts whenever they were not out fighting fire.4 The same study says that district came under Bitterroot National Forest administration in the late 1910s.4

The sources disagree about how the lookout ended. Two sites say it was destroyed in 1955.2,1 Forest Lookouts says it was taken down in 1956 and that some usable parts were recovered.3 None of them gives a cause. A Forest Fire Lookout Association list of Idaho sites marks the tower as gone.5

The sources we read do not describe what, if anything, is left on the summit today, or whether the site is open to visitors. The Idaho Fire Lookouts site calls the lookout a hike-in, so reaching it means walking.1 Anyone planning a trip should check with the Bitterroot National Forest first.
