Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Newport Hill stood in Bonner County, Idaho, about four miles north-northeast of Oldtown, in the Kaniksu National Forest.1 In August 1936 the Newport Miner printed a Forest Service ranger's report on the construction of a 45-foot steel lookout tower with a 7 by 7 foot observatory on the summit.2 The ranger said the view was good, though the tower could not be seen from the town of Newport.2
A crow's nest and a tent cabin were added in 1938.1,3 Later listings describe a 40-foot tower of Aermotor steel, built in 1959, with living quarters in a cabin.1,3 A history of the Binarch Mountain lookout, also in Bonner County, says that lookout's Aermotor tower was dismantled and moved to Newport Hill in 1959.4 That history gives the tower a height of 80 feet, which does not match the 40 feet listed for Newport Hill, so the sources do not agree on the structure.4,1,3
The listings say the tower and cabin have since come down.1,3 The firelookout.com header reads "R.I.P. 1959-?" and gives no end date.1 Idaho Fire Lookouts labels the site drive-up and marks it removed.3
