View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Nick Wynn Mountain had an L-4 cab, built in 1940.1,2 It stood on the ground rather than on a tower, in the Bitterroot National Forest, six miles north-northwest of the Magruder Ranger Station in Idaho County.1,3 The firelookout.com page gives the site's elevation as 5,750 feet.1

The cab was destroyed in 1955, and both pages agree on the design and dates.1,2 The Idaho Fire Lookouts site labels it a hike-in site that was abandoned.2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association list also marks it as gone, with coordinates of 45.77278 and -114.75932.3

We found no source that describes what remains on the mountain today, or whether the public may visit. Anyone planning a trip should ask the Bitterroot National Forest about access first.
