Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

No Business Lookout stands on Southern Idaho Timber Protective Association land about eleven miles from McCall, Idaho, and the association administers it.1,2 The mountain has been a fire-detection site since the 1920s, when it was first a camp.2 A November 1936 report in the Idaho Statesman announced a new station there, modeled on Packer John lookout near Smith's Ferry, and it placed the site about 15 miles southwest of McCall.3 The same report quotes the association's secretary as fed up with Bald Mountains, and it calls the new name a departure.3

The two-story log house, roughly 20 feet square, went up in 1937 with Civilian Conservation Corps labor.3 Accounts differ on its materials. The NHLR describes a log structure, while firelookout.com describes a log and frame house.2,4 Its 1963 replacement was built to the same plan.2,4 Keeping Watch describes the building as a D-6 cabin, essentially a small house with two floors, and calls it one of the only remaining D-6 lookouts in the Northwest.1

The NHLR says the lookout is staffed during fire season and welcomes visitors, and firelookout.com ties its staffing to the summer.2,4 In September 1966 four smokejumpers controlled a fire of less than a quarter acre southeast of the lookout. Officials were not sure what had started it.3

Idaho Fire Lookouts lists the site as a drive-up, staffed lookout.5 The National Historic Lookout Register added it to its listings on October 3, 2020.2,5

Where sources disagree

We show disagreements between sources instead of quietly picking one. If you know which is right, please tell us.

  • Sources disagree on the year it was built.

    • NHLR: 1963
    • firelookout.com -- Rex Kamstra's Forest Fire Lookout Page: 1937

Sources give different build years. Often one counts the first lookout on the site and another the structure there now.
