View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

North Snow Peak sits in Shoshone County, Idaho, on the Coeur d'Alene National Forest.1,2 In 1934 a 30-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab went up on the peak's northernmost point.1,3,2 Firelookout.com places the site seven miles east of Lakeview, at 4,630 feet.1

The tower was destroyed in 1953, according to all three history pages.1,3,2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Idaho list marks the structure as gone.4

The most recent report found is a post on Idaho Fire Lookouts dated September 14, 2025. Its writers found four footings from a tower that had been toppled, and no other remains on the site.3 The same site page files the lookout as a hike-in, so the site is reached on foot.3 No source says whether the site is open to visitors now.
