Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Norton Ridge Lookout is a ground-mounted cab rather than a tower, set inside the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness in Valley County, Idaho.1,2 The Civilian Conservation Corps built it in 1933 to the L-4 standard design of the 1930s.1,3 Forest Lookouts and firelookout.com both give 1934 instead, so the year is disputed.4,2

A Forest Lookouts page, quoting The Salt Lake Tribune, describes the station in August 1936. Fire guards were in the building when a supply drop from an airplane landed on the station stove.4 Both the window and the stove were damaged by the drop.4

Later pages describe the cabin as abandoned for years.2,5 In 2014 Arnold Aviation airlifted shingles to the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, and Treasure Valley Back Country Horsemen packed them in for storage.4 Grants from the South West Idaho RAC and the Idaho Heritage Trust were meant to fund the restoration.4,3

Forest Lookouts says the re-roof was finished in August 2015. The NHLR and Idaho Fire Lookouts both say the roof was replaced in 2014, so the completion date is in dispute.4,1,5

The NHLR registered the lookout on October 3, 2020, and calls it eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.1 Idaho Fire Lookouts lists it as a hike-in site, and no staffing history is documented.5
