View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Old Man Point was a lookout on the Clearwater National Forest in Idaho.1 In 1931 Ranger Roy Lewis first put the point into service, with a tent camp and Bill Dennison as lookout.2 That same year, carpenters Earnest Hartman and Harry Chenoweth, helped by Dennison, built a log tower and assembled a pre-cut L-4 cab on it.2

Sources do not agree on the tower's height. Three of them give 10 feet.3,1,2 Louis Hartig's 1981 history of the Lochsa Ranger District gives 20 feet,2 and a 2016 Clearwater National Forest list does too.4

The tower burned in the Pete King Fire in 1934 and was not replaced.3,2,4 Hartig, as quoted on Forest Lookouts, says the tower burned on August 17, a day or so after the lookout had been pulled to Lochsa Station to fight fires.2 A University of Idaho archive record dated August 18, 1934, is a first-person account of the Pete King Fire. It describes the CCC's fight to defend the camp and the Lochsa Ranger Station.5
