View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.2 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Packsaddle Mountain rises east of Lake Pend Oreille, in Bonner County, Idaho.1,2 A camp was set up on the peak in 1915, and a D-6 style cupola cabin went up there in 1925.3,4

In 1934 a steel Aermotor tower, 76 feet tall with a 7-by-7 cab, went up on the summit.4 The tower had been intended for Saddle Mountain, but a purchasing error sent it to Packsaddle instead.3,5

In September 1922, Charles Burns and a ranger named Smith moved the lookout crew off the mountain.1,4 The lookout was last used in 1941.4,1

In 1974 a plan to relocate the tower's upper half fell through after an Army helicopter dropped it a mile off.3,1 The leftover bottom 20 feet went into a new tower on Lookout Mountain near Priest Lake in 1977.3,5

The Idaho Fire Lookouts page marks the tower as removed, and the Forest Fire Lookout Association list marks it gone.5,2 No source we read describes what, if anything, remains on the summit today.

One trip account says several routes reach the summit, suited to hikers, motorcyclists and ATV riders. It adds that the route it took is fine on foot but has rocky, rutted stretches.1 Nothing we read describes a closure, so the summit appears to be open to the public.
