View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Papoose Mountain's lookout began in 1930 as a pole platform.1,2,3 A pole platform is simply a platform raised on poles. A tower with an L-4 cab followed in 1938.1,2,3

The site lies in the St. Joe National Forest, in Shoshone County.1,4 Forest Lookouts gives its land location as 43N-7E-25.3 The Forest Fire Lookout Association places it at 47.04555 north, 115.51999 west.4 A patrol point lay two miles southeast, atop Badger Mountain.1

The lookout is listed as abandoned.1,2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Idaho list, however, marks the tower as gone.4 The sources disagree on whether the tower is gone or only abandoned.1,2,4

None of the sources we read describe what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether it is open to visitors.1,2,3,4
