View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Peggy Peak is a hike-in site in Shoshone County, on St. Joe National Forest land.1,2,3

The earliest entry, from 1926, records an alidade and a cabin at Twin Lakes.1 A 1934 entry lists an L-4 cab.1 The pages do not make clear whether those two entries describe the same structure.

The Idaho Fire Lookouts site lists Red Dennis for 1933.2,4 It also names Boyd Hanna, with no year shown; the page attributes both names to Hardship & Happy Times by Bert Russell.2 The site names three peaks, Angle, Mosquito and Fortune, as the lookout's patrol points.2

The Idaho site lists the lookout as gone but does not have a date for its abandonment or destruction.2 The association's Idaho list also marks it gone.3

We found no source that describes what, if anything, remains on the peak today. The Idaho site labels the lookout hike-in, so any visit would be on foot.2
