View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Pettibone Ridge is in Idaho County, Idaho.1,2 It sits about nine miles southeast of the Moose Creek Ranger Station, in the Nez Perce National Forest.3,2 Some sources also call it Indian Ridge (Pettibone).4
Sources disagree on the build year. A Moose Creek ranger district inventory, which is not dated, gives 1934 for a tower 30 feet tall with an L-4 cab.4 Later lists, which draw on Ray Kresek's book, date the tower to about 1939.3,2,5,4
Until 1957 the Bitterroot National Forest oversaw the site; that year it passed to the Nez Perce National Forest.4
The lookout was destroyed in 1950.3,2,5,4
Idaho Fire Lookouts describes the site as hike-in and lists the lookout as destroyed.5 We found no source that describes what, if anything, remains on the ridge today.
Because it is a hike-in site on national forest land, it appears to be open to the public. We read nothing that restricts access.5,2
