View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Potaman Peak, in Custer County, Idaho, is listed at 9,376 feet and once held a fire lookout.1,2

The lookout was an L-4 cab, built in 1938.1,2,3 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists its type as ground rather than tower.4 Most pages place the peak in the Sawtooth National Forest,2,3 but the firelookout.com page names the Challis National Forest instead.1

Two pages list the cab on emergency status in 1946.1,2

The Forest Lookouts page dates the Forest Service's exit from the site to about 1954, when the lookout itself was abandoned too. The building, by then deteriorated, was dismantled in 1983.3 The Association's list marks the site as gone.4

A climbing guide author who visited the summit, on a date the guide does not give, found a pile of old lookout windows just below the top.5 The guide calls the peak seldom visited and says the view is worth the effort of reaching the summit.5

Apart from those windows, we found no source that describes footings, a foundation or other remains at the site. We also found no source saying whether the summit is open to the public, so check with the Sawtooth or Challis National Forest office before you go.
