View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Potato Hill sits about a mile north of Deary in Latah County, Idaho, at 4,017 feet.1,2 Locals call it Spud Hill.3
A Twin Falls News item from April 1939, quoted on the Forest Lookouts site, reports a district ranger's statement that the chamber of commerce in Dreary (the item's spelling of Deary) had donated ten acres on the summit for a forest lookout station. The item adds that the money was raised through subscriptions.4
The tower was a 15-foot pole L-4 tower, built in 1939.1,2 The Forest Lookouts site also quotes a 1921 Potlatch TPA annual report that mentions another mile of line built between the town and Potato Hill, where a lookout point was set up.4 The other pages date the tower to 1939, so the two may not describe the same structure.1,2
The tower was destroyed in 1964.1,2,4,3
Today a cell tower occupies the site, according to onX Maps.3 The route is Potato Hill Road, a two-mile out-and-back that starts on Main Street in Deary and is gated at the trailhead.3 It crosses private property, Bennet Lumber land and state parcels, and onX Maps advises visitors to mind property boundaries.3 We found no source saying whether the summit itself is open to the public.
