View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Quartzite Butte, in the Nez Perce National Forest, was a frame cupola cabin built in 1930.1,2,3,4 The Forest Service's Nez Perce list calls the cab an L-4 cab instead, so the sources describe its type differently.3

Idaho Fire Lookouts lists Ted Oliver and Ron Norwood as known staff, under a heading that reads 1929.2 That heading falls a year before the 1930 build date, and the listing does not pair the names with years, so the staffing dates are unclear.

The cab was abandoned in the 1940s.1,4 The Forest Service list gives abandonment as its fate too.3 Firelookout.com and the Forest Fire Lookout Association both list the site as gone, and the association marks it as a ground site.1,5
