View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Queen Mountain Lookout was a cupola cabin on Queen Mountain in the Kaniksu National Forest, about 13 miles north-northeast of Bonners Ferry in Boundary County.1,2,3 Sources date the cabin to 1928.1,2,3

An earlier item complicates that date. A 1914 newspaper item, quoted on Rex's page, names the Mt. Queen lookout as one of five lookout points and says telephone communications were established to it at that time.4 The sources do not say whether an earlier structure stood there before the 1928 cabin.

The sources disagree on when the cabin was dropped. Idaho Fire Lookouts gives 1930 and says the site was dropped after two years, once it was found to be an extreme lightning target.2 Peakbagging gives the same year.3 Firelookout.com says it was abandoned in the 1930s for the same lightning reason, and it lists Victor Foss under 1933, which does not fit a 1930 abandonment.1

Firelookout.com and Rex's page both mark the lookout gone.1,4 A photo visit on August 12, 2020, found only wreckage, which Peakbagging describes as the remains of the lookout.3 A benchmark disk on a rock outcrop east of the wreckage could not be found on that visit.3 Idaho Fire Lookouts lists the site as hike-in.2 Rex's page places the lookout in the Pend Oreille National Forest, the name its 1914 item uses; the other pages name the Kaniksu National Forest.1,2,4,3
