Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The lookout is now called Rice Peak. A Boise National Forest slide show says it was once called Blue Point Lookout and was later renamed Rice Peak Lookout.1 The site started as a camp lookout in 1916, and the register says the first structure there was a log cupola cabin, built in 1922.2,3

Sources disagree on when the present cabin went up. The register, Idaho Fire Lookouts and firelookout.com all give 1940 for the L-4 ground cab, which sits on a cement foundation.2,4,5 The slide show's heading dates the Blue Point Lookout to 1937,1 and a Forest Lookouts page gives only the 1930s, with a question mark.3 I could not settle the date from these sources.

According to the register, the cab has sat unused for several years, and the lookout was added to the register on July 21, 2012.2 Idaho Fire Lookouts lists it as not currently in use, and says its staffing history is not yet documented.4 A climbing guide updated in August 2020 says the cab still stands on the summit.6

Getting there is the hard part. The climbing guide says a temporary closure of forest road FS-478, which started in 2014, appeared to still be in place when the guide was updated.6 From the Rice Lake trailhead, the guide puts the summit one mile up the Rice Peak Trail.6 The slide show describes a different start, where the road washes out, and a hike of about 4.25 miles each way.1 Check with the Cascade Ranger District about current conditions before you plan a trip.2
