View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Roots Knob is a lookout site in the Payette National Forest, in Idaho County.1,2 Records give it a 1934 tower: an L-4 cab on a 10-foot pole.1,3,2 The University of Idaho's photo archive titles it Root Knob Lookout, while the firelookout.com and Forest Lookouts pages use Roots Knob.4,1,2
Idaho Fire Lookouts also has a photo of the landing field at Root Ranger Station, taken from the lookout.3
A 1952 photograph in that archive shows a ranger, Val Simpson, on the lookout's steps.4 Its caption calls the lookout abandoned, says the structure beneath it is badly deteriorated, and says it was to be destroyed.4
Two sources date its destruction to 1959.1,3 The third lists it only as removed, with no date.2 The accounts differ on how it ended.
No source describes what remains at the site today, or whether it is open to visitors.
