View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Sandpoint Baldy is in Bonner County, Idaho, about seven miles northwest of Sandpoint, on the Kaniksu National Forest.1 A camp went up there in 1921, and a cupola cabin followed in 1922.1,2,3

Newspaper items gathered on Forest Lookouts name two lookouts. A September 1927 report of a lightning storm, from the Pend Oreille Review, names Clarence Sperling and says one strike landed no more than 35 feet from the lookout house.3 In June 1929 two papers reported that Charles Stidwell was heading to the station for the summer, and an August 1931 paper said he had been stationed there.3 The notices call the place "Bald mountain" or "Mt. Baldy," and Forest Lookouts files them under this lookout.3

Idaho Fire Lookouts says the cabin has since been removed.2 Firelookout.com lists the lookout's dates as "R.I.P. 1922-?", so the removal date is unknown.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the site as gone.4

No source I read describes what, if anything, remains at the site now, or whether the public can reach it.
