View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Shearer Peak rises to 6,226 feet in the Nez Perce National Forest.1,2 A crow's nest was built on it in 1931.1,2 By 1953 the site held an L-4 cab on a 53-foot tower of treated timber.1,2 One history page also notes a patrol point about a mile to the northeast.1

On August 28, 1950, the Ravalli Republican reported that Jack Harbaugh had returned after three months at the lookout.3 Leonard Weisbeck is listed among the known staff for 1956.1 Roy Abbott is listed for 1971 and 1972, and that listing credits a source titled Faces of the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness.2

Both history sites date the tower's destruction to 1973.1,2

No source I found describes what, if anything, remains at the site today. One history page lists it as a hike-in site.2
