View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Sheep Hill sits at 5,676 feet in the Clearwater National Forest.1,2 Its lookout was a 30-foot tower with an L-4 cab, built in 1933.1,2 It appears on the Forest's list of its lookouts, compiled in June 2016.3 That list draws on Forest Service records and Ray Kresek's book, Fire Lookouts of the Northwest.3

The lookout listings all mark the tower as gone.1,2,3,4

No source describes what, if anything, remains at the site today. The Idaho Fire Lookouts page tags the site as hike-in, and no source says whether it is open to visitors.2

Another lookout also called Sheep Hill is a different structure. It sits in the Nez Perce National Forest at 8,405 feet, is actively staffed, and was added to the National Historic Lookout Register.5
