View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Sheep Mountain sits in the Clearwater National Forest, about 35 miles northeast of Orofino in Clearwater County, Idaho.1,2 Its elevation is 5,708 feet.1,2 The site began with a camp in 1914, and a cabin with an elevated platform followed in 1917.2,3

In 1930 an L-6 tower with a log cabin for living quarters replaced that cabin.1,2,3 Idaho Fire Lookouts credits Everete Van Arsdale with 22 years on the lookout, though it gives no exact dates for that service.1 The page cites the book Fire Lookouts of the Northwest for that figure.1

By 1950 the place had fallen into ruin, a date the Forest Service list also gives.2,3

Today Idaho Fire Lookouts describes the place as drive-up ruins.1 None of the sources we read describes what, if anything, still stands on the summit, or whether the site is open to visitors.
