Story
Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Sheepeater Lookout stands on Sheepeater Peak in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, on the Payette National Forest in Idaho.1,2 Sources put the summit at either 8,421 or 8,486 feet.1,2,3 The National Historic Lookout Register calls it one of the oldest lookouts still in use in the wilderness, and among the most remote.1
The first building on the summit was a hip-roofed log cabin. One source dates it to 1925, and another says the late 1920s.2,3 Two listings date an L-4 cab on the site to 1934. Keeping Watch also gives 1934 as the build year, though it labels that cabin R-6 rather than L-4.3,4,5 The Register instead places an L-4 ground house there in 1957, so the early dates are not settled.1
In 1976 a metal cab moved from the Lookout Mountain site replaced the older structure.3,4 The University of Idaho archive file ties that steel cab to Gate City Steel.2 The Register describes the current cab as a 14-by-14-foot flat-roof CL-100 on a six-foot stone base.1 Keeping Watch calls the cabin an R-6 design, 15 feet square, and says the R-6 design generally came after the L-4.5
Idaho Fire Lookouts keeps a list of known staff, with entries scattered from 1963 through 2024.4
One episode in the sources stands out: a 1954 paint mishap. In a 1999 account, former Chamberlain District Ranger Val Simpson described an inexperienced young man sent up to the lookout with a gallon of yellow paint. The young man was meant to repaint the roof numbers, but he also painted the rocks around the cab yellow, using the whole gallon.2 Within days, another lookout went up to the site to set things right. When the supervisor returned two weeks later, the yellow rocks had been turned under.2
Keeping Watch describes burned forest in view from the lookout, but no source read for this story names a fire the lookout spotted or one that damaged it.1,2,3,4,5
The sources describe an active lookout, and none reports that it was abandoned, burned or moved after 1976.1,3,5
Idaho Fire Lookouts labels the site "Hike-In Staffed."4 Keeping Watch says it is staffed seasonally, and firelookout.com says it is staffed in the summer.5,3 The Register's phrase "still in full-time use" does not square with those seasonal descriptions.1,3,5 No source says whether visitors may enter the cab, and none mentions a rental.1,3,4,5 Anyone planning a visit should check with the Payette National Forest first, since Keeping Watch says the lookout is staffed only during peak fire season.5

Where sources disagree
We show disagreements between sources instead of quietly picking one. If you know which is right, please tell us.
Sources disagree on the year it was built.
- NHLR: 1976
- firelookout.com -- Rex Kamstra's Forest Fire Lookout Page: 1925
Sources give different build years. Often one counts the first lookout on the site and another the structure there now.
