Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Shellrock Peak sits on the boundary of the Payette and Salmon national forests in Valley County, Idaho.1,2 The lookout there was built in 1935 as an R1/L-4 ground cabin, according to the National Historic Lookout Register.1 The Forest Lookouts page says it replaced an earlier lookout on Two Point Peak.3 The climbing guide quotes a 1982 history that puts that move in the early 1930s and says it was made for the view into the Payette National Forest.2 Those dates do not line up with 1935, and the sources do not explain the gap.1,2

According to the same 1982 history, the Payette National Forest usually staffed the lookout, since the country that mattered most from it lay inside that forest.2 The register says staffing stopped after 1950.1 Idaho Fire Lookouts has no documented staffing history for the site.4

Abandonment came in 1950 by several accounts.5,4,3 A 2019 note on the Forest Lookouts page says the structure is still up and can be seen on Google Earth.3 The register, which added the site in October 2020, also reports that it stands today.1

A second firelookout.com page, titled Shell Rock Peak, gives a 1936 L-4 cab abandoned in 1967, at 8,565 feet and 11 miles south-southwest of Yellow Pine.6 Three sources put Shellrock at 9,435 to 9,442 feet, and the first firelookout.com page places it 28 miles east of Yellow Pine.1,5,4 That mismatch suggests the second page probably describes a different site, so this story does not use it.

Today the site is reached on foot. Idaho Fire Lookouts lists it as a hike-in and abandoned site.4 The climbing guide describes the spot as remote, a trip of several hard hiking days, with better access from the Payette side.2 The sources do not describe public entry into the cabin, so check with the Payette National Forest about its condition before going.4,2
