View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.7 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Smith Mountain sits in Bonner County, Idaho, at an elevation of about 6,510 feet.1,2 The sources do not agree on exactly where it stands. FireLookout.com places it about 15 miles northeast of Hope.1 A January 1967 item from the Sandpoint News Bulletin, reprinted on Rex's Fire Lookout Page, puts it 10 miles south of Troy, Montana, on the Idaho side of the state line, between two forks of Callahan Creek.3 An onX Offroad trail listing describes the route as ending west of Troy.4

A 10-by-10-foot frame cabin went up on the mountain in 1930. A 10-foot pole tower, fitted with an L-4 cab, followed in 1934. Then in 1965 a two-story concrete-block building was put up with an R-6 cab on top.1,3

In July 1966 the Daily Inter Lake reported that Ernest Palin, a North Carolina student, would be the first Black lookout in the district, at Smith Mountain, and would work there until the snow-packed road opened.3

The cab sold for $211 in 1975, and Rex's page records the structure as sold and moved. FireLookout.com lists the site as gone from 1975.1,3

A July 1975 bid notice from the Kootenai National Forest offered the Smith Mountain cabin on the Troy Ranger District, describing it as built of wood on a cement-block foundation.3 That conflicts with the 1965 entry, which calls the lookout concrete block.1,3 Idaho Fire Lookouts places the site in the Kaniksu National Forest rather than the Kootenai.2

Only the onX Offroad listing describes anything left: it says the trail ends at the remains of a USFS fire lookout.4 The same page carries user status reports that disagree. One dated September 20, 2026 marks the trail Open, and one dated May 17, 2025 marks it Obstructed by downed trees.4 Those are user reports, not official notices, and none of the sources says exactly what survives.
