View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Smith Triangle was a lookout in Boundary County, Idaho, seven miles southwest of Porthill, in the Kaniksu National Forest.1,2 Its elevation is listed as 5,922 feet.1,2

The sources disagree on what was built. firelookout.com describes a 20-foot L-4 tower dated 1934.1 Idaho Fire Lookouts describes a small cabin dated 1937, and the statewide list gives the type as "Ground" rather than "Tower."2,3 No source explains the difference, so each version is given as its source states it.1,2,3

Both sites list Howard Green for 1934 and Ed Johnson for 1935 and 1936.1,2 Both also say the lookout was destroyed in the 1950s.1,2

Idaho Fire Lookouts lists the site as hike-in and destroyed.2 No source describes what remains there, such as footings or a foundation, and none says whether the public may visit.1,2,3
