View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.2 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Smith Triangle Lookout stood on the Kaniksu National Forest, about seven miles southwest of Porthill in Boundary County, Idaho, at an elevation of 5,922 feet.1,2

The sources disagree about what the first structure was.1,2 One page describes a 20-foot L-4 tower dated 1934.2 The other lists a small cabin in 1937.1 The 1934 date fits the staff list, which names a lookout there that year.1,2

Howard Green is credited with the lookout in 1934, and Ed Johnson for 1935 and 1936.1,2

Both pages say the lookout was destroyed in the 1950s.1,2

Today the Forest Fire Lookout Association's Idaho list marks the site as gone, with its type recorded as ground.3 No source describes what, if anything, is left at the site, or whether the spot is open to visitors. The Idaho Fire Lookouts listing files it as a hike-in site.1
