Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Sourdough Peak Lookout is a log cabin with a cupola on a summit of roughly 6,800 feet in Idaho County, within the Nez Perce National Forest.1,2 It was constructed in 1927 using the Nez Perce log lookout house plan, but the builder changed the planned 16-by-14-foot structure to 15 by 15 feet and added windows all around.3

From 1919 through 1931, 20 log cabin lookouts with cupolas were built on the Forest. Sourdough Peak is the only one left on the Forest today.4

The lookout was last manned in 1969. Idaho Fire Lookouts says that was the last year it was staffed, after which it went on emergency status.2 Firelookout.com and Dangerous Roads both say it was abandoned in 1969, so the sources differ on how to describe that change.1,5 Idaho Fire Lookouts says its staffing record for the lookout is not yet documented.2

The Nez Perce National Forest restored the cabin in 1994 and 1995 as a Passport in Time project, with volunteers working alongside Forest Service staff.3 The National Historic Lookout Register recorded the site on November 25, 1996.3

Idaho Fire Lookouts lists the site as drive-up, with emergency status.2 A visit it reported in September 2023 found the cabin and grounds holding up reasonably well, though two windows were broken and mouse droppings covered the building.2 The writer lingered at least an hour over the graffiti carved inside.2

The road in is NF-492 (Santiam-Sourdough Road). It is unpaved, runs 19.5 miles from Santiam Road, is not plowed in winter, and a 4x4 is recommended.5
