View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.4 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Steamboat Peak lookout stood on a peak in the Coeur d'Alene National Forest, at 4,143 feet.1,2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's list places the peak in Shoshone County.3 A camp is listed on the site in 1930.1,4

In 1934 a pole tower 40 feet tall, with an L-4 cab on top, went up about half a mile south of the peak's southernmost point.1,2,4 The tower was destroyed in the 1950s, and the sources give only the decade, not a year.1,4

The Idaho Fire Lookouts site lists the peak as a hike-in site, with the lookout destroyed.2

None of the sources I read describes what remains at the site today, or whether the ground is open to the public.1,2,4 Since the tower is gone, there is no lookout to climb.2
