View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Stillman Point is a lookout site in the Nez Perce National Forest, in Idaho County, at 5,070 feet.1,2,3 Most sources say a 30-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab went up there in 1933.1,2,4

A 1981 history of the Lochsa Ranger District tells a different story. Louis Hartig's report, quoted on the Forest Lookouts site, describes a 100-foot steel tower with an observatory enclosed in glass at the top, built in 1939, and a log cabin added in 1941.5 The report says the lookout was last staffed in 1979 and then abandoned.5 It also says the cabin was condemned, then burned, that year, though the steel tower was still standing.5

The other sources describe the pole tower as destroyed. Firelookout.com says it was destroyed about 1954, and the 2010 Forest Service list also gives 1954, with a margin of error.1,4 Idaho Fire Lookouts marks the site as destroyed and hike-in.2

The sources do not agree. The 1981 history describes a steel tower standing that year, while the others say the pole tower was gone by about 1954. None of them explains whether these describe the same structure.1,4,5

No source I read describes the site today, or says whether the ground is open to the public.1,2,5 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the tower as gone.3 In the sources I read, the steel tower appears only in the 1981 report, which is more than 40 years old, so treat any claim that it still stands with caution.5 Do not climb any structure there without checking that it is safe and that the land is open to you.
