Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Clearwater National Forest lookout on Tamarack Ridge went up in 1933. It was a 40-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab, set on the north point of the ridge.1,2,3 Two of the sources also list three patrol points from the site.1,2 The lookout's listed elevation is 4,697 feet.2,3

The Forest Service's list was compiled in 2016 partly from the firelookout.com site, so the two are not fully independent checks on the 1933 date.3,1

The tower was abandoned by 1940 and was in ruins by then. The Forest Service's list and the Idaho lookout site both give 1940 for that change.2,3 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's list marks the tower as gone.4

Today the Idaho lookout site describes the spot as drive-up ruins.2 No source describes what remains at the site today, or whether the site is open to visitors.
