View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Built in 1933, Tamarack Ridge Lookout was a 40-foot pole tower carrying an L-4 cab on the north point.1,2 The site lies in Clearwater County, Idaho, within the Clearwater National Forest, at an elevation of 4,697 feet.1,2 The records also list three patrol points.1,2

Two lists give its survey location as section 5, township 37 North, range 7 East.3,4 A 2016 Forest Service list of Clearwater lookouts, built from a regional book and agency records, gives the same 1933 and ruins dates.3

By 1940 the lookout was abandoned and in ruins.1,2,3

Today the Forest Fire Lookout Association's Idaho list marks the tower as gone.5 The Idaho Fire Lookouts page describes the site as drive-up ruins.1 No source describes what is left of the ruins, or whether there are any rules for visitors.
