Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Firelookout.com says the site was first set up in 1908 as a lookout called Bald Mtn., with a wooden cab on the ground as its first structure.1 The cab that stands now dates to 1933, when an L-4 cab went up on a tower base.2,3,1,4 The register describes a standard L-4 cab on an enclosed 10-foot tower.2 Idaho Fire Lookouts describes an L-4 cab on an 8-foot log crib for that year.3 The sources disagree on the base height: the register and firelookout.com say 10 feet, while Idaho Fire Lookouts says 8.2,3,1

The 1960s brought a change. Idaho Fire Lookouts says the L-4 was altered and placed on a concrete basement in that decade.3 The same site says the lookout was moved to emergency service in the 2000s.3

The staffing record is thin. Idaho Fire Lookouts lists Linda Bellmer Bass as relief staff from 1974 to 1982, citing a former fire lookout registry book.3 Firelookout.com says the lookout is staffed on an as-needed basis.1 The register says it can be used in emergencies.2

The register added Thorn Creek Butte on September 28, 2020, as US 1431, ID 123, and lists the Boise National Forest as its administrator.2

Idaho Fire Lookouts describes the site as drive-up and staffed as needed.3 The sources do not describe public entry into the cab or give a route to it, so check with the Boise National Forest before you go.2,3 I found no rental listing for this cab.
