View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Toboggan Hill lookout stood in Clearwater County, Idaho, about 12 miles east-southeast of the Kelly Creek Ranger Station.1 It sits at 6,149 feet.1,2 The Clearwater National Forest is the agency listed for it.1,3,4

The lookout began in 1930 as a 35-foot platform tower.1,2,4 In 1931 an L-4 cab went up on a 10-foot log base.1,3 Idaho Fire Lookouts describes it as a two-story log crib.2 A crow's nest about a mile to the southeast served as a second lookout point.1,2,4

The sources disagree about 1934. Idaho Fire Lookouts says a 35-foot L-6 tower was built that year.2 The firelookout.com page says only that such a tower may have been added.1

The lookout was abandoned in 1950.1,2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's list marks it as gone.5

An August 2023 post by Idaho Fire Lookouts describes concrete footings and other remnants lying around the site.2 The road was open until recently, but fallen trees have made it passable only on foot.2 The writers tried to find the crow's nest. They said its tree appears to have been logged or burned.2

None of the pages we read says whether the site is open to the public.1,2
