View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

West Dennis was a short lookout tower on the St. Joe National Forest, in Benewah County.1,2 Rex's Fire Lookout Page and Firelookout.com both date it to 1931, when it stood 10 feet tall with an L-4 cab.1,2 Rex's page gives its location as the code 43N-3W-9, which in the standard land-survey format means section 9 of township 43 North, range 3 West.1 Idaho Fire Lookouts reports the same 1931 tower, but lists the forest as the Clearwater National Forest.3

The tower is listed as gone.3,4 Idaho Fire Lookouts notes that Rey Kresek's book, Fire Lookout Towers of the Northwest, lists it that way but gives no date for its removal.3 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's list also marks it as gone.4

A September 2022 post from Idaho Fire Lookouts describes a brief hike to the site.3 On that visit the writers reported eye-hole supports for guide wires, a piece of lumber that was likely from the tower, and a benchmark.3
