View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

West Fork Point Lookout stood in Idaho County, in the Nez Perce National Forest, at 6,056 feet.1,2 The sources disagree on its distance from Kooskia. Firelookout.com puts it 20 miles southeast of the town, while the Forest Service list says 22 miles.1,3

The lookout went up in 1933 as a 40-foot L-4 pole tower.1,2,3 It was abandoned in 1950.1,2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association now lists the tower as gone.4

Idaho Fire Lookouts found one cement footing left behind at the site, the only trace it reports of the lookout.2 The site is filed under drive-up access.2 Idaho Fire Lookouts also found a benchmark and describes the location as gorgeous.2 Apart from the footing and the benchmark, no source describes the site today, and none says whether the spot is open to visitors.1,2,3
