View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

White Goat Lookout stood in the Challis National Forest, about 17 miles north-northwest of Challis, Idaho, at 9,421 feet.1,2 The site sat on the edge of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness.1

Both pages date the building to 1940 and describe it as a flat-roofed cabin.1,2 The firelookout.com page calls it a log cabin.1 A third listing gives only the 1940s.3

The plan was to put an L-4 cab on top of the cabin, but that cab was never completed.1,2 Both pages say the cabin was destroyed in 2000.1,2

The cabin is gone, and none of the three pages describes what, if anything, remains of it at the site today.1,2,3 Idaho Fire Lookouts classes the site as a hike-in, and the pages read do not say whether it is open to visitors.2
