View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Whitetail Butte Lookout stood in the Kaniksu National Forest in Bonner County, Idaho, about 15 miles north of Priest River, at 3,105 feet.1,2

The first structure was a 30-foot pole platform, which all three pages date to about 1924.1,2,3 Log living quarters were built onto the platform in 1928.1,2,3 In 1934 a 40-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab went up, and all three pages date it to that year.1,2,3 A photo in the Marylyn Cork Priest River Historical Collection, dated 1930 to 1950, shows a wooden tower among trees with stairs leading up to an enclosed cabin. The University of Idaho Library hosts the record online, but its Special Collections and Archives does not hold the materials.4

A January 1927 item in The Forest Worker, quoted by Forest Lookouts, describes a sudden flare-up on the Quartz Creek fire the previous summer. The fire came close enough to threaten the lookout. The item says the men on the lookout fled, but the fire died down overnight and they went back to their station.3

A 1936 item from The Newport Miner, quoted by the same site, places Jay Pearce at the lookout.3

All three pages give 1959 as the year the lookout was destroyed.1,2,3

No source read describes what remains at the site today.1,2,3 Forest Lookouts marks the entry "Removed" with no further detail.3 Idaho Fire Lookouts calls the site a drive-up, but the pages read do not say whether it is open to visitors.1
