View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Willow Ridge Lookout stood on a ridge in Idaho County, in the Clearwater National Forest, about 5 miles northwest of the Lochsa Ranger Station.1,2,3

It started as a tent camp in 1929. Ranger Ralph Hand set up the camp and put one man on the ridge.3,1 In 1930 a pre-cut L-4 cabin was packed in and put together by Earnest Hartman and Harry Chenoweth. It rested on log sills set directly on the ground, with no tower.3,1,2

By 1930 Ranger Fred Shaner was running the district and oversaw the work.3 The site was staffed every season until 1934.3

In 1934 a fire burned the cabin.1,4,2,3 The site was never staffed again, mainly because there was little to protect.3

Idaho Fire Lookouts lists the site as a hike-in.4 Louis Hartig's 1981 account places the point at the end of Trail #237, reached by way of Fish Creek.3 No source describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, and none says whether the way in is open to visitors.1,4,2,3
