Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The lookout on Pine Mountain near Elva, in Letcher County, Kentucky, was nearly finished by July 1931.1,2 A Lexington newspaper of that month, quoted on a regional lookout history site, said the state forestry department was building it with the national government.2 The station was to have telephone links, so a fire could be reported at once.2

The Register describes the structure as an Aermotor LS-60 tower.1 A 1944 notice said an association would name a forest keeper to watch for fires from a lookout station on Pine Mountain.2 That notice does not say whether anyone was hired, and it does not name Elva, so linking it to this tower is an assumption.2

The Register lists the tower as registered on January 2, 2026, with the Pine Mountain Trail Conference as administrator.1 Its entry gives no condition report. We found no source covering the tower's fate between 1944 and that listing.1,2

The Register says nothing about public access.1 We found no visitor information, so check with the Pine Mountain Trail Conference before any visit, and do not climb a structure whose status is unconfirmed.
