View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 2.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Clear Creek Lookout stood in the Kisatchie National Forest in Louisiana.1 Sources disagree about the parish. The Former Fire Lookout Sites register gives Sabine Parish,1 while the Forest Lookouts list gives Grant Parish.2

The Civilian Conservation Corps built the tower in 1935.1 It stood 100 feet tall, was made of steel, and was an Aermotor LS-40 model with a 7-by-7-foot cab.1

From 1941 to 1945 it served as both a fire lookout and an observation tower, the years U.S. Army Camp Livingston was built, occupied and closed.1

The register recorded the site on April 4, 2011, on the nomination of Mark H. Gutzman.1 A 2011 Louisiana chapter report says the site joined the register that April.3

The tower came down in the early 1980s, as most other Louisiana towers did when the state turned to overflights instead.1 The Forest Lookouts list also marks it as removed.2

No source we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether the public can visit it.1
