View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 2.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Colfax lookout was a 100-foot Aermotor steel tower with a 7-by-7-foot cab, built in 1936 by the Civilian Conservation Corps in Grant Parish, Louisiana.1 The register places it inside Kisatchie National Forest.1 The CCC crews ran the tower until 1942, when Forest Service personnel took over.1

In 1983 the tower was placed under a special use permit held by the Louisiana State Forestry Department, and it ran as a cooperative tower with the Forest Service.1 In 1988 a Mr. Thorne bought it.1

The register lists the tower as a former lookout, registered on February 24, 2011, as US 856, LA 3.1

The Forest Lookouts site records a move in 1993 to a tourist attraction in Bentley, so the tower no longer stood in the forest.2 No source we read describes what stands at that attraction today, or whether visitors can climb the tower.
