View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Brush Hill in Sherborn once carried a fire lookout.1 The Former Fire Lookout Sites register describes a 40-foot wooden tower there, first operated in 1920 and used until 1940.1 The register calls it a municipal tower, which means the town ran it.1 It gives the site an elevation of 394 feet (120 meters).1

The town's own history says Sherborn had no official fire department until 1942, when Town Meeting voted to set one up.2 The lookout's recorded use had already ended two years earlier, in 1940.1

A 2014 edition of the Bay Circuit Trail guide sends walkers southeast through the Sherborn Town Forest and up a gravel service road to the summit of Brush Hill.3 The guide describes that summit as having communications towers and no view, and it does not say whether the summit is the lookout's site.3 I found no source that describes what remains of the lookout itself, or whether the summit is open to visitors today.
