Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
The Stockholm Mountain fire tower stands in the town of Stockholm, in Aroostook County, Maine.1,2 The state's historic preservation office says the Maine Forest Service built it in 1923 to safeguard economically important timber and the resources local mills relied on.1 A Maine Memory page gives 1920 as the build year, so the sources disagree.3 A 1923 Maine Forestry Service map is centered on the tower.4
The state describes the tower as a 47-foot Aermotor LS-40 model, built on windmill frames of a type that forest services used widely.1 A visitor listing for the trails gives the height as 55 feet.5 We could not settle which figure is right.
We found no notable fire tied to this tower in the sources we read. The state's page ends the tower's period of significance in 1967, the year it last served as a lookout.1 The page does not name a last watchman.
The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Maine list shows the tower as standing, with no note that its cab is gone.2 The state's page gives a listing date of December 29, 2025 for the National Register, but its text says the tower is eligible for listing.1 Maine Preservation has put the tower on its Most Endangered list, and the town wants to preserve it for public walks.3
Today the tower sits within Stockholm Landing and Trails, a recreation area.5 The Tower Trail, which runs 5 miles in a loop, goes up to the tower, and the listing says visitors can climb it for 360-degree views.5 We found no closure notice. Check with the town before you go, since the state page and the trail listing disagree on height, and Maine Memory gives a different build year.
