View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.4 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Argus was a stairway lookout in St. Louis County, Minnesota.1 The county booklet records it as a McClintock Marshall Co. tower about 79.5 feet tall, and says the name comes from Argus Panoptes, the many-eyed giant of Greek myth.1

The tower was first the Budd Hill lookout in Lake County.2 The Lake County booklet says the 80-foot stairway tower, numbered 106, was moved to the Argus site in 1958.2 The St. Louis County booklet describes Argus as the relocated Budd Hill tower from Lake County, but gives 1959 as its date, so the two booklets differ by a year.1

The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Minnesota list marks the Argus tower as gone.3
