View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.2 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Birch Lake tower stood in Cass County, and the Minnesota Forest Service owned it.1 It was an 81-foot Aermotor ladder tower.1,2 Birch Lake Township takes its name from that lake, which borders the village of Hackensack.3

The lists give two build years. The date column says 1927, while the note on the same entry says the Aermotor tower was erected in 1928.1,2 Either way, it was sold and removed in 1981.1,2

A Minnesota tower history says the spot became a landfill and later a transfer station.3 The writer visited the former tower site, now in a gravel pit, and elsewhere on the same page calls it a sand pit.3 A photograph on the same page shows the landfill, which is now closed.3 The writer's visit was made with a transfer-station staff member's permission.3

The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the tower as gone.4
