View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Forest Fire Lookout Association's list of Minnesota lookouts marks the Dixon Lake tower as gone.1 The Central US Lookouts page names the Chippewa National Forest as the agency for the Itasca County site.2

An A-Z list of Minnesota towers describes it as a 100-foot Aermotor stairway lookout and says a Civilian Conservation Corps camp erected it in 1936.3 The same list gives 1937 in its table, so the list disagrees with itself on the year.3

The tower was offered for sale in 1972.2 The Central US page records that bids were opened on June 8, 1972, and says airplane patrols had proven better than a tower.2 The A-Z list says it was sold and removed in the 1972 Chippewa National Forest tower sale.3

No source describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether the ground is open to visitors. The list's only mention of the surroundings is that the road by the site is named 3rd River 1.3
