View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Farris lookout started life at another site. The Hubbard County tower list says it was the Steamboat Hill lookout, moved to Farris and erected there in 1952.1 It was a 100-foot Aermotor stairway tower, and it kept the number 59 it had carried at Steamboat.1

Farris, once called Graceland, was a rail village in northeast Hubbard County, west of Cass Lake.1 A 1959 survey note describes a four-legged steel structure with a metal observation room, and it gives an overall height of 110 feet.1 The table entry says 100 feet, so the two figures disagree.1

The same list says the Steamboat tower had apparently been dismantled.1 The Fire Lookout Association's Minnesota list marks both the Farris and the Steamboat sites as gone.2

I did not find a source that describes the Farris site today. I cannot say what, if anything, is left there or whether the land is open to the public, so check with the local land manager before going to look.
