View from the cab

What you see from the cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Floodwood Lookout Tower is in the village of Floodwood, Saint Louis County, Minnesota.1,2 A Minnesota lookout list gives 1940 as the year a 100-foot Aermotor tower was erected there.2 That is the only build date we found. We could not find who built the tower, who owned it, or who staffed it.

We found no account of any fire the tower watched, and no record of how it was used after it went up.

The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the tower as standing.3 The most recent image we found is a photograph on Wikimedia Commons dated August 2011.1 We found no inspection report or access notice, so its condition today is unclear. Ask whoever looks after the site before going near it, and do not climb it.
